ASTM A992 — Yield Strength, Tensile Strength and Applications

The default spec for wide-flange (W) and, by extension, WT shapes cut from them. Introduced in 1998 to standardize W-shape properties with a capped yield and a controlled yield-to-tensile ratio for predictable ductility and weldability.

Fy and Fu are specification minimums. Verify the grade on the Mill Test Report (MTR); dual-certified material is common.

Preferred specification for: W-Shape (Wide Flange), WT (Tee cut from W).

Applicable is not the same as stocked. Confirm availability with the supplier.

Common applications

Building framing beams and columns, the standard for W-shape construction.

Field notes

  • Fy is capped at 65 ksi and Fy/Fu ≤ 0.85, which gives predictable inelastic behavior; A992 is the usual W-shape material in seismic systems.
  • For HP the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) preferred spec is A572 Grade 50; A992 is widely dual-certified with it.
  • Not weathering. Specify coatings separately for exposed or Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) work.

These are the same for every structural steel grade. Strength changes with the specification; stiffness does not.
