Structural Steel & Line Pipe Price Trends
Tool NotesWhat it does, the arithmetic, and what the price excludes
What this tool does
Charts approximate raw steel pricing month by month, so an estimate can be anchored to where the market has actually been rather than to the last invoice. The record runs from July 2016 to August 2026 (just over ten years), and any window inside it can be plotted, from a single quarter to the whole span.
Pricing is split two ways. By product: structural shapes (W-Section, HP Beam, Angle, Channel) and line pipe (LSAW, SSAW). And by origin: a Domestic/International toggle swaps every series between domestic contractor pricing and international landed pricing, the latter carrying Section 232. Prices read in $/lb, $/cwt or $/ton, and picking any two months returns the change between them in dollars and percent.
A Price Adders & Reference section sits alongside the chart. It tables the costs the plotted price does not include (grade extras, coatings, testing, length and handling, freight, tariffs, Buy America and market conditions), with an estimating range for each, in whichever unit the chart is set to.
Formula
No engineering formula here: the arithmetic is the unit conversion and the change between two months. Underlying data is stored in $/lb, which is why switching units moves the axis labels but never the line.
$/cwt = $/lb × 1001 cwt = 100 lb$/ton = $/lb × 2,000short tonΔ% = (P_B − P_A) / P_A × 100what the compare card reportsMaterial cost ≈ unit price × weightweight from the Steel Weight CalculatorDelivered ≈ (base price + Σ adders) × weightthe adders are not in the chartAssumptions
The plotted line is raw steel only: mill/bare price plus distribution markup, with no coating, fabrication or freight in it. Each item named here is a real cost of buying steel that the chart leaves out, and the Price Adders & Reference section carries an estimating range for every one of them.
- Reference, not a quote, every figure is approximate. Verify against current mill price lists and supplier bids before it goes in a bid.
- Data provenance, points from July 2024 forward are calibrated to mill price lists; earlier points are modeled from BLS producer price indexes and are directional only.
- Grade extras, the premium for a specification over the base grade: A588 / A709-50W weathering steel, or ABS Grade A for marine certification.
- Coatings, anything applied after rolling: hot-dip galvanizing on exposed structural steel, or fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) on buried pipe.
- Testing, material verification the spec calls for: UT of a pipe weld seam, or Charpy (CVN) impact testing for seismic and low-temperature service.
- Length & handling, anything off-standard costs more: a short-length premium under 30 ft, or cut-to-length on pipe.
- Freight, the buyer's cost from an EXW mill: truck haul, and permits and escorts once a pipe load runs oversize.
- Tariffs & trade, Section 232 at 50% of customs value, with anti-dumping and countervailing duties layered on top of it.
- Buy America / BABA, a domestic-content compliance premium on federal-aid work, higher on pipe than on structural.
- Market conditions, a multiplier, not a line item; long lead times and mill allocation both move the number well above the plotted price.
