ASTM A252 Gr 1 — Yield Strength, Tensile Strength and Applications
ASTM A252 Grade 1: Fy 30 ksi, Fu 50 ksi (specified minimums). Round pipe for driven foundation piles, three grades by yield. Often driven open- or closed-end and concrete-filled. A pile spec, not a general structural-pipe spec.
Strength
| Grade | Fy (ksi) | Fu (ksi) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 30 | 50 | Rarely specified. |
Fy and Fu are specification minimums. Verify the grade on the Mill Test Report (MTR); dual-certified material is common.

Applicable is not the same as stocked. Confirm availability with the supplier.
Common applications
Driven pipe piles, often concrete-filled; marine and deep-foundation work.
Field notes
- Pile spec, not a structural-pipe spec. Keep it out of above-grade framing.
- Grade 3 (Fy 45 ksi) is the commonly specified higher-strength pile grade; project requirements govern.
- Ordered by Outside Diameter (OD) and wall to the foundation design, not by Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) weight class.
Material constants
- Modulus of elasticity E: 29,000 ksi
- Shear modulus G: 11,200 ksi
- Density: 490 lb/ft³ (0.284 lb/in³)
- Poisson's ratio: 0.30
- Thermal expansion: 6.5 × 10⁻⁶ in/in/°F
These are the same for every structural steel grade. Strength changes with the specification; stiffness does not.
